Top Tips for the Communication station:

Beginning

  • Always Introduce yourself and your role.
  • Ask the parent/patient how they are
    (builds rapport).
  • Ask them if they want anyone else involved in the conversation.
  • Take someone with you (for difficult conversations).
  • Say you won’t be interrupted, and that you’ve put your bleep away.

End (last 3 mins)

  • Agree plan and summarize.
  • Offer follow-up leaflet + to meet with consultant/senior member of MDT.
  • Offer to come back and answer questions.
  • Thank them.
  • Ask what they understand about the situation.
  • Provide your explanation.
  • Clarify understanding + offer chance for questions.
